Political Discussion on Facebook
case study of the Brazilian government campaign "Small Corruptions – Say No!"

This article presents the results of a case study inspired by the idea that non-specialized Internet environments may constitute a locus of political discussion. We analyzed a Brazilian government initiative on Facebook: the "Small Corruptions – Say No!" campaign. To what extent has the campaign promoted political discussions on Facebook? We answer the question by means of an extensive content analysis of all comments the campaign posts received. We also measured the citizen engagement associated with the campaign’s posts. Findings indicate that although the campaign generated a lot of engagement, the actual levels of political discussion were lower than expected. Our results suggest that the political homogeneity of some online communication environments is more an effect of the individuals’ particular social context rather than their different views.
