Data Journalism and Quality of Open Government Data in Brazil
Issues, Challenges and Obstacles in the Professional Appropriation Process

This article has the objective to characterize the journalists’ experience reusing open government data to produce journalistic content. In order to understand this interface, this paper proposes a research based on a survey and semi-structured interviews with 51 professionals, and an quantitative and qualitative exploratory analysis. The results show that “outdated files,” “lack of intelligibility” and “incomplete information” are the most frequent dysfunctions, mentioned as problems to more than 60% of the journalists interviewed. Around 94% have already gave up on a journalistic agenda due to the datasets’ quality problems. This study concludes that there are significant practical obstacles that interferes on the quality of the published information and their effective reuse.
